Yazy is back!
Excited about the project from the beginning, as I was designing a table (that I had never done before) and collaborating with new people is always a positive way to get to know everyone’s strengths and talents and learn from people to improve myself. Working for a client was quite motivating for me as It would be a good challenge designing a table for a real person and towards there needs, instead of designing something for myself.
Fortunately, this project encouraged me to learn more about the designing software Solidworks, especially as the more I completed tasks on Solidworks the more I actually enjoyed using it and learning new techniques on the software that I could then take back with me into my own field. One of the techniques I learnt on Solidworks was ‘Simulation’, in which I could stress test my table on Solidworks to see how stable the product is and if it could with hold a certain amount of pressure. I found it quite intriguing how it then generated a video of the simulation; soon learnt how I could screen save this video for my presentation and my own record.
I explored a lot of newer ideas and concepts around Monocoque design in tables, that I didn’t think I would normally explore into a potential design if I had not done this project. Previously in my designs I would look at products that are made up more than one part, however in this project, I had to narrow down my design options to only being designed out of one single sheet of metal which I originally found to be quite a challenge. However, I got a lot of inspiration from Pinterest and previous designers who would make monocoque furniture.
Quite proudly, I self learnt about making new layers onto Solidworks to make a very convincing Whisky Bottle (decanter) and glass, which included whisky liquid in the decanter to make it look more realistic.
Overall, the word ‘Monocoque’, I didn’t properly understand what type of design features that represented until the first couple of lessons in the project. Exploring around folding and bending material into one piece of furniture had become very fascinating to me as in theory this could save a lot on the environment and depending on what material and where is it being sourced from it could become very cost effective. Another software which links to that research that I learnt is called ‘Sustainability’. This software is inbuilt into Solidworks, and it can show the environmental impacts and qualities on whatever material was selected onto my product. The final technique I learnt on Solidworks was how to digitally design an Orthographic drawing on my chair. Within this I could then label up all the measurements and look very professional. All these techniques I can then use to develop my future projects in so many ways, and I really feel like I have improved a lot on my Solidworks skills. I am personally very proud of myself.
I personally really liked looking around Dragon Laser company and visually seeing all their big Laser Cutter Machines and Bending Machines. Really impressed that they were able to manufacture my design, that was chosen in my group by my client, by using their facilities.
